FAQ : All about mEye™ > Webcam/CCD Cameras/Dome Cameras
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What webcams must I get to enjoy these new features?

There is absolutely no need to get special/expensive web cams to enjoy the new features. Local Recording/Playback and Motion Detection can both be enabled with any type of web cam in the market. These features are not web cam dependant as our mEye™ software has been developed to be able to independently enable these features.

What type of CCD/Dome cameras are supported?

Most CCD/Dome cameras are supported by mEye™. All CCD/Dome cameras will be connected to a video capture card slotted in to a PC(s).

* Please take note that CCD/Dome cameras are only supported for the mEye™ Enterprise Edition.

Should I get a webcam or CCD/Dome camera ?

Depending on your usage. If you are intending to use mEye™ for light monitoring and within a certain area of your house for example, then a webcam will be more viable as its cheaper. However, it will not be able to cover the entire house due to the limited length of the webcam wire. (the most 15 feet/ 5 meters) which will then need to be connected back to the PC. An alternative to webcam will be CCD/Dome cameras. These cameras can be used either outdoor/indoor whether in well lighted area or poor lighted areas (using infra-red cameras). The distance coverage of these cameras are also much more further.

How many web cams can I have with mEye™?

Where can I get more web cams?

You can get common webcams from any IT shops.

How far can one USB web cam cover?

A USB web cam can optimally operate within the range of 15 feet/about 5 meters.

How do I install all the webcams?

Install each web cam one by one and follow the on screen instructions of your web cam vendor. After that, if you have not installed mEye™, proceed to install mEye™. Then, once mEye™ is running, it will prompt you to select the cameras. The cameras that appear on the drop down list will be those that are online and those that you have properly intalled their driver first.

I do not have so many USB ports! What should I do?

Normally, each PC should have at least 2 USB Ports. If you want to install more than 2 cameras on one PC and do not have enough USB ports, get a USB extension port from any IT vendor which typically consist of about 6 ports, to connect all your USB webcams to.
